A new conversation about personal finance.

Your Goals and Your Values

Exploring Your Values

What are values?

Values are those things that make up your character; what you think is important in life. Your values affect your actions and decisions, it is what is on the inside not the outside that counts.

“I control my life by knowing what counts”

What or Who has an Influence on Your Values?

Daily you are influenced by a numbers of factors; people, groups, and even your own thoughts and emotions. It is important to be aware of when your values are being influenced, sometimes it is intentional and other times you may not even be aware until you look back and ask why.

Possible Influences

  • Family
  • Friends
  • Books
  • Community
  • Social Media
  • Clients
  • Mentors and Coaches

Adverting, The Good, The Bad, and The Shiny

Advertising is information you receive about a product or service from the producer or sales and marketing organization. Their goal is to get you to buy their product and not the competitors.

To what extent do you think your buying decisions are affected or influenced by advertising?

The Good

  1. Information about the product including, what is new and improved.
  2. Encourages competition with deals, specials and promotions
  3. Helps consumers compare the different products available.

The Bad

  1. Scare Techniques
  2. Scarcity of time and money
  3. Emotional appeal

The Shiny

  1. Latest Trends
  2. Encourages you to be a spender and not an investor
  3. Needs vs. Wants

Things to Think About

  • What are the biggest factors affecting your values?
  • What is the best “Ad” you have seen in the last 6 months? Why ?
  • What values influence your buying decisions the most?
